General and Prosthetic Dentistry

When it comes to general dentistry, people usually think of cleanings, taking Xrays, fillings, braces, extractions, crown and bridges, dentures, and maybe root canal treatment.

Dr Noohi,  as a specialist in Prosthodontics and Periodontal &Implnat dentistry, provides a wide range of general dentistry procedures. Whether you need a simple filling, or a more complicated restoration you can be sure that it will be done at the highest level of care and as meticulously as possible. Below are some examples how Dr. Noohi can help you.

  • Professional Dental Exam & teeth cleaning
      • The best doctors are those who are best in diagnosis the problem and not how to treat them. For the purpose of treatment planning, the intraoral assessment involves a thorough examination of teeth, the surrounding structures and occlusion (Bite). Radiographs are an essential tools for caries assessment as well as the health of the supporting structures, e.g. in case of bone loss, etc. Risk assessment is also another important factor to be able to diagnose properly and include a preventive plan in the overall treatment plan. Obtaining a accurate medical history is also an integral part of any dental exam. In many young patients all this can be a quick check but for many people especially adults with many previously restored teeth this can be a time consuming process. It is important to differentiate between a patient focused assessment vs. an Insurance focused one.
      • Pick your doctors wisely. Try to establish a relationship with them and gain their trust and attention. The worse way to pick a doctor is when you go down the list of doctors who “take your insurance”.
  • Digital Xrays
      • Radiographs help the dentist assess and accurately diagnose many oral diseases and conditions. About half of the man-made radiation exposure is related to medical CT scanning. Dental radiographs account for approximately 2.5 percent of the effective dose received from medical radiographs

  • Digital CT Scan of jaws
      • Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), introduced in the U.S. in 2001, produces a three-dimensional image of maxillofacial structures, with uses in oral surgery, orthodontics, and endodontics. The scanner rotates around the patient’s head producing several images, which are assembled or reconstructed by scanning software.  CBCT creates a 3-D image comprised of voxels. It helps to diagnose invisible cracks in a tooth, assess the width and height of jaw bone three dimensionally prior to implant placement, evaluate osteoarthritic changes in jaw joints (TMJs), assess the position of impacted teeth, and much more.
  • Second Opinion & Consultation with a Specialist
      • Getting a second opinion and having a consultation with a specialist is always advised, especially if you are going through a complex treatment. Keep in mind there is no weekend course or mini-residency that can cram 2-3 years of education into a few days. Being exposed to advanced information by taking a course on a weekend won’t make you proficient in that procedure. Prosthodontists are in a unique position to gather information about your oral health and put the pieces of puzzle together to come up with a plan customized for you. It is all about thinking it through and plan accordingly. You will never be sorry to consult with a specialist.
      • Whether it is a trauma to your tooth, e.g. from a fall or if a tooth breaks,or when crown breaks or comes off, your denture breaks, your implant comes out of your mouth,  you can always get in touch with our office and schedule an appointment on the same day.
  • Teeth whitening & Bleaching
      • Many products are now available for patients to whiten their teeth. Safe and effective whitening options are available for in-office applications, dentist-supplied products for use at-home and over-the-counter whiteners. Tell us what you desire and we will provide what is best for your needs.
      • Many Brides choose to whiten their teeth for the big day and wedding photos.
      • Temporary tooth sensitivity and gingival inflammation are potential adverse effects associated with whitening. However there are ways to minimize the risks. Ask Dr. Noohi, how he can help you.
  • Fillings and Bondings
      • When your tooth breaks, chips or an old filling comes out, you may just need a new Filling, and not necessarily a New Crown. We use the most advanced bonding techniques and  the best biocompatible materials to fill your cavities in the most cosmetic way (click here). Each direct bonding is performed to match your existing tooth, no matter it is too small or too large.
  • Aesthetic/Cosmetic Dentistry
  • Porcelain Veneers
      • Porcelain veneers are used to modify the shape and color of teeth. Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are etched and then bonded to the enamel of the teeth. Precise tooth preparation is necessary to avoid over bulking of the tooth, but it is limited to the enamel and usually involves only a few surfaces of the tooth. If you are getting ready for an event like a wedding, you may consider to have your visible old and discolored fillings with an ultra-conservative veneer.
  • Dental Crown
      • Crowns or “caps” fully cover to restore the normal function and appearance of the tooth. Crowns may be made as all metal, porcelain fused to metal or all-ceramic (porcelain). Crowns are indicated for teeth with very large fillings, teeth that have had a root canal, fractured teeth and/or discolored teeth. About 15% of teeth with crowns will need root canal treatment. So it is important not to cap a tooth unless it is needed. Ask Dr. Noohi, if you are the right candidate.
  • Dental Bridge
      • Traditional method to replace a missing tooth or teeth include the fabrication of a bridge. A bridge can replace one, two or more teeth using the adjacent teeth as anchors. To replace a missing tooth with a bridge, at least one tooth on either side of the space created by the missing tooth must be prepared for a crown. Then a false tooth is joined to the crowns, and the entire structure is cemented permanently to the prepared teeth. The patient cannot remove the bridge, and special aids are available to keep it clean.
  • Inlays and Onlays
      • An inlay is an indirectly made restoration that replaces tooth structure within the cusp tips of a tooth and an onlay covers the entire biting surface of a tooth. While conventional fillings are molded into a tooth preparation, inlays and onlays are custom fabricated in dental laboratory and then bonded into the tooth for added support and strength. Defective or unattractive restorations and existing cavities can be replaced with highly esthetic tooth colored ceramic or gold inlays and onlays. Both Inlays and Onlays are considered partial coverage restorations ( in contrast to full coverage ones, called caps or crowns) and are more conservative approaches comparing to full coverage, because less tooth structure is removed and there is less chance to need a root canal treatment. Many dentists choose a Crown (full coverage) over an Onlay (partial coverage), merely because it easier to perform and the reimbursement for a partial coverage is less than for a crown by dental insurances. It is basically what I said earlier, treatment plan can be “patient focused” or “insurance focused”. Ask Dr. Noohi, what is the best option for you.
  • Removable Full Dentures (Conventional and Digital)
      • When a patient no longer has any natural teeth, complete dentures are the traditional method to restore function and appearance of all the missing teeth. Complete dentures are replacement for having no teeth, and should not be compared with a full set of real teeth, simply because they are removable in nature while natural teeth are fixed in the jaws.
      • Many patients experience difficulty wearing conventional dentures because of poor stability and decreased chewing function. The use of dental implants to improve the stability and retention of dentures is becoming quite popular.
  • Full or Partial Over-dentures (teeth or Implant supported)
      • For those who have compromised teeth and are ready to loose them all, thre might be another solution if you cannot afford dental implants. The roots can be saved as anchors to provide support and significant stability to your dentures. And it is called over-dentures. Ask Dr. Noohi, if you are a candidate before you have your teeth extracted.
  • Removable Partial Dentures
      • When there are multiple missing teeth, weak anchor teeth or no posterior teeth to anchor on, a removable partial denture is used to replace teeth. These restorations typically are made of a metal framework and a plastic base with teeth. They must be removed for daily cleaning and at night.
  • Night Guard
      • Often patients who grind their teeth at night are unaware of their habit, but the forces exerted on both the teeth and the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) can be quite destructive. A custom-made night guard can protect the teeth and relieve pressure on the TMJ.
  • Athletic’s Guard
      • It is important to protect our teeth during sport activities. The american Dental Association Councils are committed to oral health promotion and injury prevention for sports participants, and have made scientific recommendations. Ask how we can have a custom made Athletic Guard made for you to prevent sport related injuries.
  • Tooth Extraction
      • Atraumatic tooth extraction in the area of dental implants has become an important concept. Yanking a tooth out in 5-10 minutes and feel like a hero is not an advantage anymore. Saving what is left of your jaw bone is always easier, and less expensive than regenerating and rebuilding what is removed during a quick tooth extraction. We use Piezotome to remove teeth atraumatically and conservatively. Healing is faster, and morbidity post extraction is less. For our patients it means less pain and quicker healing. Consult with Dr. Noohi to find out what is the best course of action for you
  • Sedation and Nitrous Oxide
      • Use conscious sedation, Nitrous oxide-oxygen inhalation sedation is a readily available, safe, and highly effective method of elevating a patient’s pain reaction threshold. In addition to nitrous oxide, we provide anxiolytic pills to calm your down and make the dental procedure as comfortable as possible while still awake.
  • TMJ Disorders
    • Changes to your bite can affect your jaw joints or temporomandibular joints(TMJs). These changes can lead to symptoms of TMJ disorder (TMD), a condition that can lead to jaw pain which can radiate out to create painful and persistent headaches or even neck and shoulder pain.

Sleep Apnea

      • Sleep apnea refers to a temporary cessation of breathing while sleeping. Many times the airway is obstructed by the patient’s throat anatomy, enlarged tonsils, long soft palate, etc. After proper diagnosis  of sleep apnea one method of treatment is C-PAP to improve breathing. An alternative treatment is placement of a specially designed night guard that re-positions the lower jaw more forward can improve the airflow to the lungs. Talk to Dr. Noohi, to find out if your a a candidate for an intra-oral sleep apnea appliace.
  • Minor orthodontics (ClearCorrect)
